Mario & Luigi Dream Team is the fourth entry in the Mario & Luigi RPGs for Nintendo’s handheld systems. With a release in North America for 3DS Aug. 11, 2013, I had more than a month to complete and try the “Hard” mode of the game before making an analysis.
For veterans of the series, many characters found in previous entries make cameos throughout the journey across Pi’illo Island. Mario and Luigi are on vacation where Princess Peach accidentally carried into the depths of the castle. Mario and Luigi venture through a series of rooms where the basics of the game are learned before gathering a petrified pillow. Luigi decides to plop on a bed with the newly found pillow found where a dream portal opens and Peach enters. Mario leaps into the dream portal where he learns about the Pi’illos and the game truly begins.
The Mario & Luigi series is releasing its fourth entry in August, which is a great time to take a look back at the previous entries leading to the duo to once again being the only playable characters (as of the last released trailer). The timed button pressing action/adventure RPG (Role Playing Game) series gives players a sense of increased urgency response to attacks and counterattacks, which have grown more complex while fine tuning the formula with each title.
Mario & Luigi Super Star Saga hit the handheld market for Nintendo’s Gameboy Advance in North America Nov. 17, 2003, beating the rest of the world’s release by a mere three days. The game begins with Peach’s voice becoming *literally* explosive. The duo head off to the Bean Bean Kingdom to find the cure where several twists come throughout the plot. Mario and Luigi attack with timed hits and defense in a similar style of Super Mario RPG. The timed button presses and strategic attack options extended from the familiar jump to hammers, fire and lightning powers as well as the staple of the series Bros. Attacks. The game has a lot of backtracking, which allows players to gain a sense of replay value to older areas that would otherwise be useless once traveled.
