Beginning with a single monster, learn the ways of the scouts to recruit and synthesize the strongest monsters available in the Dragon Quest franchise. With monster selections spanning more than 20 years of the games, complete the main story and compete to become one of the top monster scouts in the weekly World Monster Championship.
The game begins with the protagonist stowing away aboard the Albatross on its way to the Monster Scout Challenge. The plane crash lands on the Island of Mystery, where, in order to save the crew, the hero must find and return the crew and passengers to the plane. The hero will receive the Scout Ring and receive a monster to take on the task upon landing.
Upon seeing an opponent, a battle may begin with a preemptive strike depending on the direction the enemy is facing. A display with come up with the usual options including the game’s staple: Scout. Scouting may seem easy in the beginning, but monsters can very greatly in chance to recruit. For example, don’t expect much luck catching a meddle (metal) slime on the first sighting.
Many monsters will be seen throughout the journey, and battles become more difficult with the with original team not quite able to compete in areas. Besides making monsters stronger, a huge number can only be obtained through synthesis. Once this option is unlocked in the game, it is wise to utilize it. Monsters can be obtained for more than sheer stats, but for the skills they possess as well. Through synthesis, a dracky may be able to have the Green Fingers skill from stump chump, which it cannot have only through scouting.
Synthesis is what makes this series so much different from Pokémon. Two monsters (or four in some cases) with opposing charges (positive, negative or neutral) will form another monster. Later in the game, items can influence the charge a scouted monster will be and staves will determine the charge or even the monster produced from a synthesis.
For anyone familiar with the art style of Akira Toriyama (manga artist responsible for the monsters in Dragon Quest franchise), the graphics do not disappoint. Every monster appears in great detail and animation, both in battle and on the field. With the shoulder button to swivel the view, every detail can be viewed.
The game has great replay value. Form a team specifically to scout monsters to increase their recruiting power. Many post-game monsters require a very strong team to recruit. Moves like oomph and sag as well as traits such as hit squad and talent scout could be enough to win over these beasts.
Even after the game is finished, training monsters specifically to compete in certain ranks on the World Monster Challenge will keep the metal king slimes fleeing as experience points are collected for the next X rank monster synthesis. A few monsters can only be obtained through placing in the weekly championship.
Although once this game released and the original no longer had a server to connect, this sequel is vastly superior. Essentially, DQMJ2 does everything the original did, but better.
